Massage Provides Comfort, Connection to the Elderly

The elderly suffer deep loneliness in our culture. In addition to the pain and discomfort that accompany their changing physical state, they are often isolated at a time when comfort is most needed.

"I think these people have touch hunger," said Cheryl Chapman, R.N., N.C.T.M.B., and a former nursing-home director. "In a nursing home or at home, there is no one there on a daily basis to hug them."

The elderly are often in mourning for spouses, pets, even for homes where they built their lives, and live with constant fear of dying alone. Into this void, massage therapy offers powerful consolation. Simple, gentle strokes can ease physical discomfort from conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis, and help increase circulation to infrequently used muscles. It can also benefit those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease or have had a stroke, as a means of communication. Massage also helps to reconnect the elderly with bodies that have long ago failed them.

There is no negative to doing massage for the elderly.

There are cautions, however. Massage therapists should be advised what kinds of medication elderly clients are taking or if there are any contraindications to them receiving massage. This is also a time for light touch, as fragile skin can bruise easily.

For the most frail clients, or for those who are modest, simple hand and foot massage or face massage is recommended. The undivided attention is enough for most of these clients. It tells them they are still lovable.

We don't try to heal them or make it better. just touch them with love.
